What is PCOS/PMOS?
Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) is a complex hormonal and metabolic condition.
It can involve irregular ovulation, higher androgen levels and polycystic ovaries, although not every woman with PCOS experiences all three. And just because you have polycystic ovaries upon ultrasound does not mean you have the syndrome.
What are the symptoms of PMOS?
Symptoms can include:
- Irregular or absent periods
- Acne
- Excess facial or body hair
- Hair thinning
- Difficulty with ovulation
- Changes in weight or blood glucose regulation
- Fertility difficulties
Symptoms can vary considerably between individuals.
What causes PMOS?
PMOS is influenced by multiple factors, including genetics, insulin and blood glucose regulation, ovarian hormones and androgen/hormone activity.
There isn’t one single cause, and treatment should be based on your individual presentation.
Can PMOS be treated naturally?
PMOS can often be supported through targeted nutrition, lifestyle and naturopathic treatment.
Depending on your presentation, this may involve supporting blood glucose regulation, ovulation, androgen balance, inflammation, nutrient status and menstrual health.
Can a Naturopath help with PMOS?
Yes! Naturopathic care can help you understand your individual PCOS/PMOS presentation and develop a treatment plan around your symptoms and goals – whether that’s improving periods, acne, ovulation, energy, metabolic health or fertility.
Do I need to have cysts to have PCOS/PMOS?
No!
Despite its name, you don’t necessarily need to have polycystic ovaries to be diagnosed with PMOS.
PMOS is diagnosed using specific clinical criteria, which consider factors such as ovulation, androgen levels and ovarian morphology.
If you’re experiencing irregular periods, acne, unwanted hair growth or other hormonal symptoms, there is soooo much in the naturopathic space we can do to help.
