Studies show that 80 per cent of the population will suffer from back pain at some time, but these days the back pain is especially common among Aussie kids.
Here are our most common back complaints we see school-age kids:
Scoliosis
Children between the ages of 11-14 can go through quite fast ‘growth spurts.’ This can often be the time when kids’ spines can twist. Getting an assessment from an Osteo can alleviate problems associated with a twisted spine.
School bags
They seem to be getting bigger and more awkward, placing unnecessary strain on young kids’ backs.
The best thing you can do is place the bag as high on the shoulders as possible and fasten around the hips. Make sure your child’s school bag can do this to avoid potential back problems later on.
School chair posture
Some kids just struggle with having good posture because of the heights of school desks and chairs.
We see a lot of this at our clinic. Most of the time, pain and discomfort for school age kids can be alleviated with a few small changes in school desk setup – either at school or home.
School and sport
Movement is essential to good health, but as kids grow they sometimes can’t do all that they want to in sport or at lunch break.
Seeing an Osteo, who looks at the cause of the problem, can help to address spinal issues before they become a bigger issue. Let’s keep our kids moving.
Top tips for your kids’ back care:
- Make sure your child exercise regularly, play sports, spend time outside running and being active
- Keep your children well hydrated and always pack a bottle of water to school
- Include protein in the school lunch menu to help repair tissue
- Ensure your child has a supportive mattress
