The Gut – Brain Axis
Did you know there are more neurons in your gut than in your brain?
Did you also know that serotonin, dopamine, GABA, norepinephrine and glutamate are all largely made in the gut, where they play a role in the complex orchestration of brain and nervous system physiology? This is known as the gut-brain axis.
The axis is bi-directional, meaning anything affecting the gut can affect the brain, and vice versa. This helps explain why we may lose our appetite when anxious, or why brain fog can occur with microbial overgrowth or gut infections.
Neurotoxicity can occur when chronic digestive issues are left unaddressed, while altered brain chemistry can similarly affect digestive function.
Natural medicine is well equipped to support the rebalancing of this axis using an array of evidence-based herbs and nutrients. An experienced naturopath can systematically support this symbiotic balance by addressing underlying causes while minimising unwanted side effects.
